Tuesday, 31 January 2012On Thursday 16 February 2012 The Fort William Mountain Festival in the heart of the west Highlands is the place to be for an evening of full-on mountain bike action. The festival's bike night, supported by Alpine Bikes, stars none other than British mountain-bike legend Steve Peat. The Sheffield-born Downhill World Champion and multiple World Cup Winner returns to Fort William, one of his favour ite venues on the World Cup circuit, to talk about his latest film project, life as a mountain biker and other career plans in what is sure to be a lively Q&A session.
Plus, prepare for your jaw to hit the floor as MTBcut's Stu Thomson presents his latest film collaboration, 'Industrial Revolutions' with the incredible street trials riding star Danny Mackaskill. This time out, Danny shows off those incredible bike skills in an industrial train yard and some derelict buildings. You'll never look at an industrial landscape in the same way again! 'Industrial Revolutions' has just won 'Best Tube Length video in the 'Best Shorts' awards in California USA; and has had 4,512,951 views on You Tube.
That's not all - we'll also be treated to films of other top riders doing things that the rest of us wish we could in '3 Minute Gaps' in which acclaimed film-maker Clay Porter follows the global journey of the very best of World Cup Riders as they train, race, live and make history!
The Mountain Festival is also proud to première the new film from local biking heroes, 'The Dudes of Hazzard'. Check out their facebook page to find out more. One of the Dudes, Jo Barnes, who rides for the MTBcut Race Team, will also be on hand for a Q & A session.
The bike evening will be comp_red by Andy McKenna, founder of Go-Where Scotland mountain bike company.

The 2012 Fort William Mountain Festival, presented by the Outdoor Capital of the UK, has now been announced and it's set to be a fantastic five-day celebration of mountain culture, based in the bustling Highland town of Fort William from Wednesday 15 - Sunday 19 February 2012. This year's festival includes a superb line-up of lectures from top climbers and mountaineers, mountain bikers, and mountain filmmakers; and film screenings from cutting edge outdoor athletes and adventurers.

Monday, 30 January 2012Women's health and well being will be celebrated once more at the Fresh Choice Women's Bike Run Tri at Lake Hayes on March 3 when teams and individual athletes from around the South Island gather to compete in the popular annual exclusively female event.
Formerly the Southern Lakes Women's Duathlon and Triathlon the event was rebranded to reflect the introduction of an 8.1km run around the Lake Hayes track to the programme last year.
Director Pascale Lorre says there is a good demand for a run as part of the overall event and expect it will continue to attract strong interest in its second year.
"The event is all about participating with friends and colleagues and celebrating women in a different way. We find the all-women environment makes it a good entry level event that women enjoy without feeling any intense competitive pressure, be it a triathlon, duathlon or run ."
Sponsorship for the high profile Womens Bike Run Tri has been confirmed by the owners of Fresh Choice Queenstown for the next three years, underlining their commitment to supporting the local community.
Fresh Choice has been lead sponsor of the event for the past ten years and Tony and Prudey Wild have endorsed their ongoing support.
"We are all about supporting people who support us," says Ms Wright. "This event fits very well with our business philosophy and we are pleased to be associated with it. The triathlon has a healthy living focus which is something we are always keen to promote through our operation."
Categories for both the triathlon and duathlon include individual and teams in open while the 8.1km run is targeted at individuals.
The triathlon course includes a 300m swim or 2km kayak on Lake Hayes followed by a 15km bike ride on the Lake Hayes/Arrowtown road into Speargrass Flat road and return followed by a 5km run/walk on the Lake Hayes track to finish line at the Lake Hayes pavilion.
The duathlon begins with a 1.5km run on Lake Hayes track, follows the triathlon's 15km biking leg and concludes with a 5km run to the finish line.
The Bike Run Tri is being held for the 20th consecutive year and attracts both elite and recreational sportswomen.
"It is an ideal event for all levels of ability, from women who are entering their first event to prospective triathletes who go on to compete in other more competitive events."," says Lorre. "The teams category is also a great opportunity for friends or work colleagues to compete together in a relaxed environment."
A superior women's road bike, provided by Fresh Choice, will be presented on the day as a spot prize giving all competitors an equal chance to win it.
"The bike is just one of a number of fantastic prizes being supplied by our sponsors. The race pack that every entered women receive is overflowing with goods, making it one of the best any competitor would get in this country. Friday, 27 January 2012On Jan. 30, 2012, about 50 injured veterans and supporters will take part in the first MTB challenge on the trails of the Cottonwood Conservation Area west of Las Vegas. In this Ride 2 Recovery Blue Diamond Mountain Bike Challenge, sponsored by MGM Resorts International, they will ride trails based on each rider’s ability and injuries. When necessary, R2R has modified the bikes to accommodate i njuries.
This event is in response to requests from injured veterans for R2R to create a MTB Challenge. R2R, a 501(c)3, sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, helps injured veterans improve their health and wellness through individual and group cycling. R2R enables service men and women to ride no matter their disabilities - modifying road bikes, mountain bikes, hand cycles, recumbents and tandems to fit the needs of riders. There will be several trails for each day to accommodate the expertise and injuries of the riders.
Cyclists will be joined by John Tomac and Ken Chlouber for the three-day ride.
Thursday, 26 January 2012The Franklin and Marshall College Elite Cycling team is hosting its first 24 hour indoor Cycle-A-Thon this weekend to raise money for 'Racing to Register' (http://www.racingtoregister.org) -- the Pennsylvania non-profit founded to inspire people to join the Be The Match Registry (formerly National Bone Marrow Donor Registry.)
The students will begin cycling tomorrow, January 27th at 4: 00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the Steinman College Center. Members of the cycling team are raising money through pledges and will take turns riding their racing bikes on indoor stationary trainers as a continual relay for 24 hours.
Racing to Register was founded in 2011 by F&M alum Tom Kramer. Tom’s wife Pam was diagnosed in 2009 with a rare form of Leukemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Using endurance sports as a platform, Tom (F&M Class of 1989) undertook the mission of completing a marathon, two half Ironman triathlons and one full Ironman race in one year to inspire others to join the Registry. Today, RTR is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation which has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential patient matches for patients.
"The cycling team has a long standing relationship with Racing to Register and its founder Tom Kramer,” notes F&M Team President Robert Burnett. “Tom is an active triathlete, cyclist and supporter of our team. He has educated all of us on the importance of joint the registry, and giving back to the community. We are thrilled to be holding this cycle-a-thon which will become an annual event."
Tom Kramer, founder of Racing to Register adds "we are thrilled that the F&M team has decided to support us in this way. Young people age 18-25 joining the registry is a critical base of potential donors, so this is a very important demographic for us to reach. We encourage everyone to come out support the cycling team and, most importantly, join the Be The Match Registry.”
Currently there are only 10,000 people on the national registry; RTR has registered approximately 2,000 people since 2009.

Tuesday, 24 January 2012The Bicycle Trails Council’s 2nd Annual Benefit, a screening of Bicycle Dreams at the Grand Lake Theater on Thursday, January 26 at 7 PM, is nigh. This award-winning movie about the Race Across America is rich with cycling meaning, excitement, and character. Fred Boehling, president of RAAM in Colorado, will speak about the movie at its conclusion along with other participants in that event. A Q& A will follow; and that is always very interesting.
Our raffle, which has developed $4000 in prizes, is the focus of donations from dozens of shops and industry friends in our cycling community. Our presenting sponsor, Solano Avenue Cyclery, has donated a GoPro video camera for the Grand Prize. Other prizes include very valuable gift certificates, quality helmets, Camelbaks, riding jackets and jerseys of Lycra and of Marino wool, insulated bottles, cycling magazine subscriptions, seat packs, bottle racks, tires, and even small kids bikes, tune-ups, a dome tent, REI classes, and so much more. Everything must go, and it will go to you if you join us. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.
The response to our benefit has been gratifying and we have swelled out of the 220 seat theater and into the grand theater holding 650 so there will be plenty of room for all. Solano Avenue Cyclery, has donated our logo water bottles which will go to the 1st 100 who arrive, and will be filled with Clif product and other goodies. In addition there will be free magazines and tote bags at the door, while they last. And let’s not forget that there is $1 discount on beer for all raffle ticket holders at the Heart and Dagger at the after-party nearby.
