San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua - 2010 Howler 2- Day Mountain Bike Race in Nicaragua

A wide array of international mountain bikers from Canada, the United States, Costa Rica and of course Nicaragua, along with many local sponsors, helped put the "Howl" in a great weekend of Nicaraguan Mountain Bike racing action. Generous sponsor prizes and a big 1st prize purse drew the 2010 Howler Mounta
in Bike Race to a successful close. While an unbelievably fit Costa Rican racer took the overall "Gold", Nicaraguan team Immobia was very strong in overall participation in Howler Mountain bike race.

1st place winner Santos Corea Gutierrez of Costa Rica takes home $500 USD and local athlete Harvin Briones rode home on a new mountain bike donated by Vancouver visitors, Rod Dagnear and Tara Walsh.

"Not only did Rod and Tara make the huge donation of bikes, they flew down a bike box stuffed with new helmets, gloves, glasses, jerseys, tires, reflectors and brake pads so nearly everyone took home something from the race. We were also lucky enough to give out a few complimentary nights' at local resorts Villas de Palermo and Pelican Eyes, five $20 bread certificates from Pan de Vida and many press mentions from Del Sur News and La Prensa newspapers. We couldn't ask for a more generous outpouring of support for the event and the athletes." commented Larry Thraen of Bodhin Adventure Services, the race organizer and promoter.

Thanks go to all the local sponsors including:

Rod Dagnaeu took 2nd position in Elite Division and won a night at Pelican Eyes and Tara Walsh was the only female racer in the pack. "Not only did we enjoy the experience of biking in Nicaragua and competing in the race, it was a great opportunity for us to help build the mountain bike scene here. Getting involved with the race while we were vacationing here really allowed us an opportunity to give back," commented Tara Walsh the female rider from Vancouver, British Columbia. "It's wonderful to see the impact by donating to the cause and how it can touch the community, especially after witnessing the huge surprise on the face of Harvin when he received one of the two bikes we brought down. It nearly brought me to tears."

"The race simply couldn't happen without all our amazing local volunteers. Even a visiting doctor and his wife generously volunteered a half day of their vacation to oversee a technically challenging section of the course to help ensure the safety of the athletes," mentioned Thraen. "Without our generous volunteers and sponsors, we would not have been able to attract the elite teams, generate interest from Costa Rica, and host a great experience for everyone involved," he added.

The second annual, 2-day event was held in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and is planning to wrap the racing season with another race in 2010 in November.

With the upcoming publication of his new book, cycling blogger and Bicycling columnist Bike Snob NYC has revealed himself to be Eben Weiss, 36, a former literary agent who lives in Brooklyn and races for Gotham Bikes. Here's what he has to say about giving up his anonymity.

So who are you in "real life" and what do you do for a living?
I'm basically the person I've always claimed
to be in my blog--a wiseass and lousy racer who rides a bike around New York City--only now there's a name attached. The big reveal is that I don't actually have a helper monkey named Vito. Thanks to my book and other projects I'm now a full-time writer.

What made you decide to give up your anonymity?
I want to be able to travel in support of my book. Doing interviews in a balaclava tends to scare people away and get you in trouble at airports.

Are you afraid that going public will ruin your mystique?
I'm not sure how much "mystique" a guy who admits to owning a Scattante and falling down during a road ride pee break can have.

What is your book about?
The most important thing to me when writing it was to convey something that takes many of us a long time to learn--that cycling is tremendously fun, tremendously practical, and tremendously healthy, and that you should feel free to discard pretty much every rule, fashion, and product the rest of the cycling world holds sacred. I hate the idea that there are people who don't approach cycling because they think they need certain equipment, or because the whole thing seems so inscrutable and they're worried they're not "cool" enough, or because some Cat 4 told them they can't ride without a power meter.

What's the hardest ride you ever did?
I was nearly undone by the 120-mile Rapha Gentleman's Race in New Paltz, New York, in which my team was defeated by a number of others, including Bicycling. It wasn't even that the ride was hard--it was getting beaten by the Fit Chick that really hurt.

Bike Snob: Systematically & Mercilessly Realigning the World of Cycling Culture comes out in May ($17; chroniclebooks.com).

San Diego, CA - BikeWear World L.L.C. and uRide.tv have been contacted by PacificSports L.L.C. and AEG to film the "Breakaway Ride presented by Specialized" with celebrity guest riders Patrick Dempsey and George Hincapie. "I knew this year was going to be fun and amazing, but I had no idea that we were going to have access and involvement with events of this caliber. This is like winning a free t rip to Disneyland for kids. Honestly, it does not get much better than having the opportunity to film one of my favorite riders Mr. Hincapie and my most favorite blue eyed actor, Mr. Dempsey," says Sami Tauber, CEO of BikeWear World L.L.C.

"Cycling enthusiasts and fans are invited to participate in "Breakaway Ride presented by Specialized," two riding events held in conjunction with the upcoming 2010 Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race set for May 16-23, 2010. Both rides will be held in April 2010 to raise funds for Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer® initiative, which aims to raise awareness of the continuum of resources available from prevention to education, and patient care to advocacy and financial support. The Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partners include the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community (formerly The Wellness Community), Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship," according to the director.

"Each 'Breakaway Ride' gives cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to ride the actual route of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. Three distances will be offered for each ride to accommodate various skill levels; the longest distance covers the same route that the pros will ride (an entire stage). Riders will be chip timed and supported, with a maximum of 3,500 riders per event," quoted from the race event director’s site breakawayride.com.

"We actually are flying the plane up to Davis, California to do a dry run of aerial photography above the second 'Breakaway Ride presented by Specialized' on April 25, 2010 to see if it's prudent for the Tour of California in May," says Tauber. "I am not sure if it will look cool above the peloton or on the road with the peloton. We are going to have fun with it, regardless. I can't wait to see Mark Cavendish, George Hincapie, Rahsaan Bahati, Floyd Landis, Cesar Grajales, Carlos Sastre, Dave Zabriskie, Christian VandeVelde, Lance Armstrong and all the competition it's going to bring right in our back yard! We don't have to fly to France now to watch the greatest cycling legends battle it out," says Tauber.

Once again, May, is probably the most exciting month for all riding enthusiasts. The FIM World Championships in Supercross will be held in Las Vegas and the Tour of California, which will be making its way from city to city, starting in Nevada City ending in Los Angeles. "We can't wait! So link up and join us," says Tauber.

Keep pedaling, keep dreaming and ride hard.. Outfitting one rider at a time, around the world and twice on Sundays.. we are coming for you.
