Friday, 29 January 2010STORM presents Miles of Discomfort Marathon at the Flat Rock Ranch Comfort, Texas on January 30, 2010.
Flat Rock Ranch is located just outside of Comfort, Texas in the beautiful Texas hill country. The Dreiss Family has owned and operated the ranch for over 100 years. Beginning in1999, STORM has built and maintained mountain bike trails at Flat Rock Ranch. There are over 25 miles of sw eet single-track with epic switchback climbs, technical sections and sustained descents.
The trails offer stunning views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. Flat Rock Ranch hosts several mountain bike events throughout the year. The sweet single-track filled Lower Loop includes Pipeline Hill, The Evil Worm, Crazy Ivan and Terri's Trail. The rocky and technical Upper Loop includes Mount Park and Flint Hill. Flat Rock Ranch does not allow dogs, so bring your bike, but leave Fido at home.
The tentative Schedule of Events is as follows:
SATURDAY JANUARY 30
7:00 AM: Registration opens (registration closes at 8:40 AM)
9:00 AM: Start - Marathon Men, Marathon Women, 1/2 Marathon
RACE DISTANCES / CLASSES
• Half Marathon: 26 miles, Lower loop then Upper loop
• Marathon: 52 miles, Lower loop then Upper loop X 2
PRIZES
Marathon Race:
The fastest men overall will receive cash and awards 1st – 10th
The fastest women overall will receive cash and awards 1st – 5th.
Half-Marathon Race:
All classes will receive awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
LAND ACCESS FEE: $6 PER PERSON.

Friday, 29 January 2010After the success of the Cross Country XC Group Rides throughout 2009, Buckinghamshire Mountain Biking (Bucksmtb) will be once again holding them throughout 2010 as well.
For 2010 however they have much bigger plans.
Bucksmtb will be holding a regular monthly Cross Country Ride at various locations all over Buckinghamshire and beyond; some rides held on local Chiltern Trails , others held at local MTB areas. Bucksmtb will also be looking to hold some DH/FR/4X/XC riding days at various suitable MTB Bike Parks and riding areas also.
Also on the cards are some "away days" where Bucksmtb will be arranging rides elsewhere throughout the UK, i.e. Wales. These "away days" will primarily be day trips to suitable MTB riding areas. Bucksmtb will be organizing the rides, and the option of following a led ride or making you own way round the trails will be available. Bucksmtb will aim to help out with organizing people travel and cost sharing car shares also.

Thursday, 28 January 2010Entries are now open for the 2010 Alpine Epic multi-stage four-day mountain bike race to be held from Mt Somers to Lake Tekapo on February 24-27, 2010.
Limited at 100 teams for 2010, the event will see two-man teams pit their skills and endurance against rivals over 243km of untamed terrain through high-country stations and alpine passes from South Canterbury and into the Mackenzie Ba sin.
At the inaugural event last year Team RoadCraft's Marcus Roy, of Invercargill, and Kashi Leuchs, of Dunedin, won four out of the five stages in a total time of 13hrs27min47sec.
"The isolation is the unique factor in this race. You have this feeling of remoteness with just a couple of sheep tracks as guidance and knowing full well that the only people to venture up here are the musterers and us," Leuchs said after the race in 2009.
The first event of its kind in New Zealand, the Alpine Epic combines raw adventure mountain biking with streamlined logistics. Each night a large marquee is set up to feed the riders and a presentation is held over dinner to acknowledge top-placed riders and share memorable moments from the day. Breakfast is also catered for and riders camp out each night in a tent village.
Described as the toughest mountain bike race in New Zealand the event attracts riders from throughout the world – in 2009 teams from the UK, Czech Republic, Switzerland and America vied for the title. Alpine Epic event director Nick Ross said it was the feedback from the inaugural event that made the 18 months of planning worthwhile for his team.
"Riders really seemed to understand what we were trying to do in creating a laid-back atmosphere set in the spectacular South Island high country," he said.
"We are pretty excited about 2010, we are planning on continuing where we left off in 2009, with some awesome remote campsites, challenging and scenic riding, while giving people the chance to hang out and meet riders from all over the country and world."
Mr Ross also noted that there would be a few "tweaks to the course", including a completely new last stage which will take in the rolling country above Lake Pukaki.
"We are also working on a few other surprises to keep things entertaining," he said.

A new Decade and a brand new race series for you to get your tyres dug into. Formerly the NPS the "British Downhill Series" is the new name for the Nationals.

Tuesday, 26 January 2010In the run up to his gap year adventure next month Mark Coffell is packing up his bag, memorising his route maps and working on his fitness for the journey ahead. An astonishing feat as just over a year ago Mark's life was hanging in the balance. In summer 2008, Mark contracted a potentially fatal bacterial-infection whilst on exercise with the Royal Marine Reserves and was rushed to the intensiv e care unit of Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for urgent treatment.
The tireless staff spent a week battling to save Mark from the grip of toxic shock and septicaemia after the infection reached his blood stream. Now fully recovered, Mark has contrived an unusual way to express his gratitude 'the hospital basically saved my life, and I decided that to say thank you, I would organise a sponsored cycling event to raise money for the unit as part of my gap year.'
In just a few weeks Mark, his brother Michael and college friends Christian Jones-Gardner and Iain Johnston will be setting off on a bicycle odyssey around New Zealand. The quartet holds high hopes of raising considerable funds for the unit and as well as gaining sponsorship from their peers at Emmanuel College, they have set an ambitious target of £10,000 for the trip.
Their chosen route will see them speeding from the hustle and bustle of Auckland to the depths of the Waitomo Caves with leading gap year company Real Gap's New Zealand Ultimate Explorer, Bike and Hiking Tour. Covering a staggering 1,500 miles, the team will cycle an average of 25 miles a day, whizzing past an array of stunning sights including the Bay of Islands, Fox Glacier and Ngauruhoe volcano, featured as 'Mount Doom' in the Lord of the Rings films.
When asked about their choice, Mark revealed that this had been the least agonising part of the process. 'We spent a long time searching through various gap year websites and cycling trips to find the right one, and the Real Gap Bike and Hiking Tour in New Zealand jumped out at us. It was exactly what we wanted; a set route with everything organised for us, all we have to do now is turn up and do the cycling!'
