Simpson Stars on the Gold Coast Campaign

WEDNESDAY, 25 NOVEMBER 2009

Gold Coast BMX rider, Cherie Simpson, has become one of two athletes to become the face of a local council campaign called "Mates for Life". After winning the first round of the National Probikx Series and the Queensland State Title on the Gold Coast in September, Simpson's media exposure caught the eye of the organizers at the Gold Coast City Council.

Since then she has become part of the "m8s4life" campaign developed to make teenagers more aware of the dangers of stormwater drains. The focus of the campaign is to keep your mates for life and don't let them do anything life threatening. The message points our that there are lots of risk-taking sports our there to replace the danger of playing around stormwater drains. This year the campaign has two extreme sports people, Cherie Simpson (BMX) and Jason Hazle (bodyboard).

The campaign runs until March and involves advertisements with Cherie on her DK bicycle displayed on lots of the council bus shelters. The athletes will also feature on 50 000 mail outs. After the launch yesterday Cherie Simpson was excited, "I never thought I would be posted up all over the city! It's great."

The website www.m8s4life.com.au has prizes on offer, video clips, mp3 clips, photos, fun thrill seeking games, education resources and information on the m8s4life campaign. There is also facebook and twitter.
