Redhook California Duathlon Set For September 12th

MONDAY, 24 AUGUST 2009

The Redhook California Duathlon has been scheduled for September 12th 2009 at Mt Baldy. The event, sponsored by Redhook California Duathlon, sponsored by Redhook Ale and Coates Cyclery, Kona Bikes and Giant Bikes, combines a 10 mile biking and 3 mile running events in one race.

"This can be considered the duathlon of all California duathlons because of the rugged Mt Baldy terrain and the high altitude," states Ole Ellingson, Duathlon coordinator.

"This is a high altitude challenge as competitors will be biking and running at elevations between 6,000 and 8,000 feet."

"It doesn't matter whether you're a first-time duathlete or a hard-core competitor the Redhook California Duathlon and the Mt Baldy terrain will test your endurance and perseverance,"

The course starts with a 10 Mile Bike ride from Mt. Baldy Ski Lift parking lot. A fast 3/4 mile ride on pavement down past beautiful San Antonio Falls then turns up on dirt fire road to the Top of the Notch, continue on up to top of #2 lift (Snow Ball Point) and down over Race Run Gate through the Monster snow tubing burm jumps. Then up past Desert View on Mullins Mile around new reservoir (Juan's Pond), back down and up #4 lift (Roller Coaster Run) around Water Tank, set up for steep technical decent back down to bottom of Turkey Shoot! Keep the speed going down the Gulch through the bottom of Thunder and up past small reservoir (Dorn Dam); turn down fire road at Five Points ride down past the Falls and back up on pavement to Upper Ski Lift Lot transition station.

Bikers transition at the parking lot to start the running portion of the event. The 3 mile Run starts up steep Cut Off trail for 1/4 mile then back on fire road to Five Points, turn left for final dash around the Top of the Notch Restaurant to finish at top of #1 Sugar Pine Lift!

"The Awards Party including trophy presentation and raffle prizes will be conducted at the Notch," concludes Ellingson.

Entry fee for the Redhook California Duathlon is $49 in advance or $59 on race day with registration starting at 6am.

Friends and families are encouraged to ride the Ski Lift to the Top of the Notch Restaurant to cheer on the competitors and participate in the post race activities.

Mt Baldy can be reached by taking the Mountain exit in Upland off the 210 Freeway and going north following signs to Mt Baldy Resorts. Alternatively take the Baseline exit in Claremont and go north on Padua. Turn right on Mt Baldy Road taking that all the way through the Village. Mt Baldy Road dead ends in the Ski Lift parking lot.
