Buchanan's Bragging Rights with World Cup Win

WEDNESDAY, 24 JUNE 2009

Canberra's Caroline Buchanan took the win in her last World Cup Four Cross race in Maribor, Slovenia overnight. The 18 year old won the fifth round convincingly after avoiding the collision between Anneke Beerten (NED) and BMX Olympic bronze medallist, Jill Kintner(USA). Despite wet and muddy conditions Buchanan stayed ahead of the World Champion, Melissa Buhl (Arizona USA), to claim the win with Buhl second, Beerten in third and a disappointed Kintner in fourth place.

For Buchanan this marks her second only World Cup win in her career. Her first was a memorable home town win in Canberra during the World Cup last August.

Buchanan will head back to Australia now after a successful overseas campaign resulting in a second place two weeks ago in round four of the World Cup in Fort William, Scotland.

Also on the podium was Queenslander, Jared Graves with second place in the elite men's final. The 26 year old was able to stay upright on the slippery track but could not pull back Dutch rider Joost Wichman.

Kintner and Graves retain their respective series leads as the World Cup heads to Canada for two more rounds. Both BMX Olympians are expected to miss the BMX World Championships this year due to their mountain bike commitments.

Buchanan however returns home on Tuesday and will refocus on BMX before heading to Adelaide for a national team training camp just prior to the BMX World Championships in Adelaide. The training camp begins officially on the 17 July.

Graves and Buchanan, the current national four cross champions, will then compete at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Canberra between 1-6 September.
