Downhill Endurance, No Fuss for Lochaber College
WEDNESDAY, 2 JULY 2008
No Fuss Events announced yesterday that Lochaber College UHI is the headline sponsor for The Fort William Downhill Endurance, which has been billed as the most extreme downhill mountain biking endurance race in the UK.
The Fort William Downhill Endurance will be staged on the internationally renowned downhill track at Nevis Range near Fort William - home to the 2007 Mountain Bike World Championships - on Sunday, 7 September 2008. Participants will register at Lochaber College UHI on Saturday evening (September 6) prior to the event where they will have the opportunity to enjoy the relaxed surroundings before facing the grueling challenge that awaits them.
Dan Morgan, Head of Adventure Tourism at Lochaber College UHI, said: "The Fort William Downhill Endurance is the perfect event for us to get behind. It is radically different and exciting. Working with No Fuss Events on this unique and challenging event offers the College and our students on the BA Adventure Tourism Management course an exclusive and rare opportunity to learn about major, world-class outdoor events, allowing them the chance to engage with industry and top athletes at a premier location from the very start of their course. The ability to get involved with an event of this nature and at this level is exactly how a degree of this kind benefits from being based in Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK."
As one of the longest and most physically demanding courses on the international mountain bike race circuit, riders of this grueling event will need physical strength, quick reflexes, superb bike control, and an unerring eye for the right line as they speed down the 2.82km track at Nevis Range. They will also need huge amounts of stamina in order to ride the track as many times as possible in six hours!
College Principal, Laurence Young, said: "I'm so pleased that our sponsorship of this original event with a leading local business has been agreed. It offers our students invaluable experiences and illustrates the value of our venue here in Lochaber. Our involvement in adventure tourism in the area, especially this type of event, is paramount to the continued success of our degree in Adventure Tourism Management. We're very glad to offer the College's support to this as a first-ever event of its kind in our UK adventure tourism calendar. We look forward to helping the day be a complete success and for it to continue into the future as an annual event."
Frazer Coupland of No Fuss Events said: "No Fuss are excited about this new relationship. If Lochaber is to keep its mantle as the Outdoor Capital of the UK then the community needs to get behind events where there is a financial gain for the whole community. We cannot afford to be complacent. Lochaber College UHI's contribution to the event is invaluable, students will get a hands-on learning experience and No Fuss will get willing, enthusiastic, and professional support with participants getting a real feel of a community event."
The idea of the event is not only to test endurance but also reliability. Participants will only be allowed one bike and a list of itemized spares to see them through the whole six-hour event. At the bottom of each run, participants have the opportunity to enter the tech area to carry out any running repairs, replenish fluids, and to take a breather.
All in all, the day shall be a true spectacle with riders pushing themselves to limits, not only on the course but also on their technical ability in order to keep there mounts in good order to cover in excess of twelve descents of this iconic course at Nevis Range.
