First Mountain Biking Trail Opens in NYC
TUESDAY, 22 MAY 2007
The Parks Department has opened the first-ever mountain biking trail in New York City last Saturday in celebration with "It's My Park" Day.
"It's the first legal mountain biking trails in all of New York City," said Jamie Bodner of the New York City Mountain Bike Association. Trails for cross-country, free-ride and BMX are now located at Highbridge Park, which with the rest of New York City parks have banned mountain biking since 1993.
A young mountain biker has related that previously, there was no park. There used to have a couple of trails at the back of Inwood Park but after sometime, they were taken off because it was not allowed. "So now I have somewhere where I can come any time and just show my tricks", he said. The mountain biking course was built by volunteers over a period of 18 months.
