The Friends of the Chester Creek Branch, a non profit group, has received a $300,000 worth of grant to finance the construction of a hiking and biking trail out of a rail line. The grant would be abl e to cover the initial phase of the 6.7 mile-trail from Chester Creek in Upland to Wawa. The first three miles of the trail will be opened to the public in 2009.
The group was also able to convince the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority to participate in the rail to trail project in the form of leasing the trail. With the help of the Delaware County, a 30-year lease allows the construction of a trail out of the rail line. SEPTA would reclaim the trail if demand of the rail line would build.
Carl Knoch, a trail-development expert in Harrisburg for the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, said that finding the funds for the trail causes delay that is why it takes a decade for a trail to make. The Friends of the Chester Creek Branch was organized about twenty years ago.

The schedule for the 2007 American Mountain Bike Challenge (AMBC), an event qualifier for the 2007 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships, has already been announced by USA Cycling. T he 2007 AMBC consists of 26 races, with events in 18 US states. It will kick-off in Reddick, Florida on March 11 with the Southeastern Regional Championship Series and ends with the Piney Hills Classic in Ruston, Louisiana. The AMBC offers off-road cyclists a chance to join competitive mountain biking in the local and the regional entry level.
The AMBC was created in 1996 and it features Olympic-style cross-country racing, gravity racing, among other competitive mountain biking disciplines.

Public listening sessions will be held across California to gather public input from mountain bicyclists and other trail users. The public input will be incorporated in making a mountain bicycle management
strategy covering all the 18 national forests in California. The public listening sessions will be held at Sacramento Area on Nov 30; San Diego on Dec 5; Los Angeles on Dec 6; Redding on Dec 12; and Bay on Dec 14. It is organized by the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with the International Mountain Bike Association.
The mountain bicycle management strategy, as envisioned by the Forest Service, has two parts namely (1) situational assessment that will characterize existing issues and opportunities and (2) implementation toolbox that will provide managers with a number of prescriptions to address issues identified in the situational assessment.

Volunteers are needed to help in monitoring the "environmental health" of the 22,000-mile Appalachian Trail which passes through 14 states and eight national forests in the continental United States. T he volunteers or the so-called "citizen scientists" will gather information about the flora and fauna, air and water quality, among others in the trail. Brian Mitchell, a coordinator with the park service, said that two flagship programs for volunteers are expected to be established within next year.
Reports about the collected information will be distributed to the public to help them understand the "trickle-down effect" of problems in the environment.

Mountain bikers who have been using the Flightline, a 300-acre land property near the McClellan-Palomar Airport, for almost two decades now are trying to save it even if the land property is already being fenced an
d bulldozed. The land was transferred by the country to the nonprofit Center for Natural Lands Management which has set it aside as a natural habitat. Most of the land was a property of the county before it became an open space with restrictions in use.
Many mountain bikers have been upset when they found the land property with a fence and a locked gate. Stefan Rest, a mountain biker, even created a website that has an online petition to save Flightline. However, Markus Spiegelberg, the San Diego manager for the land management center, said that the there is a conservation easement which is an agreement that prevents the use of the property from biking, horse back riding motorcycling.
