Compton Wins First International Cyclocross Race
WEDNESDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2006
Katie Compton, two-time defending US women's cyclocross champion, has won her first international cyclocross race during the Granogue Cross UCI held at the Granogue Estate off Montchanin Road last Saturday.
Compton competed with forty riders, including Georgia Gould, the current NORBA national cross-country mountain biking champion, and Lyne Bessette, the current Canadian cyclocross champion. Cyclocrossworld.com called it "one of the most anticipated cyclocross races of the season" as three of the most awarded female riders competed for the first time in the same race.
The riders had to battle with rough terrain and challenging obstacles such as a mud pit and a steep hill in the 2.6 kilometer course consisting of five laps. Compton related that it was a tough technical course because of the off-canter turns that force riders to turn 90 or 180 degrees on steep slopes. Nevertheless, she was able to get off with a good start and a lead among the riders.
