Biking Injuries Rise With Increase in Popularity
FRIDAY, 27 OCTOBER 2006
A part of the estimated 50 million mountain biking participants all over the United States is found in Western North Carolina where road cyclists are being lured by profusion of trails.
With the growing number of mountain biking enthusiasts in the locality also comes the growing number of injuries sustained. Brian Lawler, director of sports performance enhancement at Blue Ridge Bone and Joint, said that majority of all competitive mountain bikers and half of all mountain bikers -recreational or competitive - get injuries annually. Twenty-six percent of them require medical care while four percent need hospitalization.
Lawler said that a broken collarbone is a common injury sustained by mountain bikers. "[But] over-all, it's safer than road biking. There can be major injuries, but rocks and roots on the trails tend to be more forgiving than a fast truck," Lawler explained.
