Tour de France Winner Fails Drug Test
FRIDAY, 28 JULY 2006
American cyclist Floyd Landis tested positive for a banned substance after winning Stage 17 of the Tour de France race.
The Phonak Cycling Team where Landis belongs has confirmed that there was an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone ratio in the "A" sample test done after Stage 17. A second sample or the "B" sample still has to confirm the result. A positive "A" sample does not guarantee the use of performance-enhancing substances.
Phonak Cycling Team also said that if the "B" sample result confirms the "A" sample, Landis will be dismissed.
Tour de France requires stage winners and over-all race leaders to be tested after every stage. They also make at least two random selections.
Landis won in Stage 17 last July 20, beating Oscar Pereiro of Spain and Andreas Kloden of Germany. He is the third American cyclist to win the Tour de France.
