Mountain Biking - Pedaling Techniques
Besides Mounting/Dismounting, Shifting Gear, Using Brakes of your Mountain Bike, Pedaling Techniques are another important facet of Mountain Biking.
Since pedaling is the way a bike is supposed to be propelled, it would be good to know the proper technique in order to achieve maximum energy transfer. Here are some tips in efficient pedaling:
- Appropriate Mountain Biking shoes and clipless pedal helps in improving power transfer from rider to bike.
- Try to pedal in a circular motion. Avoid plainly pushing down on the pedal. Using clipless pedals will actually allow you to pedal up while the other foot is pedaling down. Be sure to this in synchronistic and circular manner.
- Generally, spinning or pedaling at a high rpm (approx. 85-95rpm) is more energy efficient. Although, due to the changing terrain in Mountain Biking, it is almost impossible to get a rhythm going, moreover a high cadence. If you want to know more about Cadence, click here.
- Try not to spin too fast that you end up bouncing up and down the saddle. You'll know what we mean once you ride your bike and start bouncing.
- Ask an experienced rider to check your technique. A third person's point of view is usually a better view. That way you may get good feedback.
