Mountain Biking Injury Prevention

Preventive maintenance of your Mountain Bike is highly essential and it will help in keeping you on the safe side. This could lead to the avoidance of unnecessary accidents. Dealing with your surroundings may also cause injury. Be wary of the wildlife and other people. These are some ways to help prevent any unwanted circumstances in trail riding.

Know several ways on how to prevent injuries in Mountain Biking:

  • Approach animals with caution.
    Wild animals are very unpredictable so approach them with caution. Never startle them by shouting or making any loud sound.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
    Safety against criminals is something you have to look after. Be wary of suspicious people you see on the trail. Always ride in a group and avoid using the same trail often.

  • Avoid riding in the dark especially if the trail is unfamiliar to you.
    Plan your ride and know more or less how long it takes. If riding in the dark is unavoidable, be sure to have reflectors on your bike and on your clothing. Headlights will also be useful.

  • Always wear your helmet.
    It won't fully protect your head but it will minimize any head injury that you may suffer.

  • Know the environment of the trail.
    If locals say that the area is infested with mosquitoes, be sure to use insect repellant. Malaria is still present in some tropical countries.

  • Plan well. Know your route.
    When traveling in an unfamiliar path, bring a map and compass. Try to use one trail in and the same trail out. Orienteering may also be helpful in finding your way out if you get lost.

  • Keep your Mountain Bike in good condition or it will definitely let you down.
    Always ride with basic tools and spare tires.

  • Avoid the road as much as possible.
    Using the road means having to deal with motorists. However, if you have no choice, bike defensively. Use bike lanes and be aware of reckless drivers. Keep away from parked cars - a door may just suddenly open right in front of you.

  • Always stay hydrated.
    Drink every 20 minutes even if you don't feel thirsty. If you do feel like you need to drink, dehydration may be kicking in.

  • Check the weather reports.
    Avoid riding in bad weather. Check your local weather station to keep you informed.

There are so many ways of preventing injuries. In general, plan ahead, take the necessary precautions, and use proper gear and equipment. Also, be aware of your surroundings to avoid harm and unwanted injuries.
