Mountain Bike Chain Removal and Repair
Knowing how to remove and put back the chain is useful both for maintenance and emergency repairs. Follow these simple steps:
- Rest the chain on the chain-riveting tool. Turn the t-handle clockwise to push the pin out of the links. DON'T push it to the extent that the pin falls of the last link. Twist just enough for the middle part to be detached.
- For damaged chains, take out the damage segment and connect the segment again.
- In order to connect the chain back together, insert the middle link in between the outer links.
- With the pin sticking out the outer link, push the pin in all the way to the outer link on the other side.
- When taking out a damaged segment, the chain would naturally become shorter. This will limit your gear ration but it will be enough to take you home and buy a new chain.
These are the steps you need to know in order to remove and put back the chain of your bike. These steps will hopefully help in either detaching your chain for cleaning or repairing your chain on the road.
