Mountain Bike Shifters

Mountain Bike Shifters are those small devices located on the handlebar next to the grips. These are used to shift gears - to activate the front and rear derailleurs in order to move the chain from one gear to the other. Mountain bikers use the shifters to change gears when traversing different terrains. For instance, you will need to shift to a higher gear when riding downhill, while climbing a hill will require lower gear.

These are the basic kinds of Mountain Bike Shifters:

Thumb shifter
This is the most basic type. Thumb shifters are mounted on top of the handlebar. These are operated with a push of the thumb and a pull of the index finger.

Rapid Fire shifter
This type of shifters is usually located at the bottom of the handlebar. It is activated by two push buttons. In new models, this shifter has a push and pull lever. Shifters for the rear derailleurs can shift up to a lighter gear (three at a time), and shift down to a heavier gear only one at a time. Shifters for the front derailleurs work the opposite way. They shift up to a heavier plate and shift down to a lighter plate. Both up-shift and down-shifts are done one plate at a time.

Grip shifter
The way this shifter functions is similar to a motorcycle throttle. Turning the grip shift for the rear derailleur inwards will shift up to a lighter gear, while turning the grip shift outward will shift down to a heavier gear. As for the grip shift for the front derailleur, turning inward will shift up to a heavier gear and turning outward will shift down to a lighter gear.
