Meanwhile, multi-stage races are often referred to as a “race within a race.” The race consists of several stages that are carried out consecutively. The competitor that garners the lowest cumulative time to finish all the stages is declared as the General Classification (GC) or over-all winner. Several stage races also have some other awards and classifications for individual winners. There is also points classification winner, and the "King of the Mountains" (or Mountains classification) winner.
Some stage races can be a series of several road races. There can also be individual and possibly team time trials. The stage winner is declared as the first person to cross the finish line that entire day or the time trial rider with the lowest time on the course.
