Hey all,
I'm looking to start doing some CX riding for cardio exercise and to hit some trails I snowmobile on in the winter months.
Here's the problem, I don't know ANYTHING about bikes! I know well enough to not buy a bike from a big box store (i.e. WalMart), but not sure where to even start when it comes to buying a good, solid bike.
Ideally I wouldn't be spending more then $1000 - $1200. The trails I plan to hit are fairly rough and I anticipate a decent amount of mounting and dismounting. I should also mention that I am 6'4" and about 275 lbs. and plan on riding pretty hard.
Not sure what other info might be needed to offer some advice, but any and all suggestions are welcome!
Thanks in advance.

Buy a full suspension mountain bike if you can afford it. Hardtails,
without rear suspension, are lighter weight and pedal more efficiently
but full suspension designs offer more comfort and better control.

No, I have not made the purchase yet. I have been looking at full suspension bikes and the options out there.
Hopefully I will be heading up to my local cycle store soon to get an idea of what I need in terms of a frame, as piecing this together on line has proven difficult.
What have you all found to be the best way to purchase? Buy the whole bike ready to go, or buy individual parts and custom build your ride?

I like Full Suspension but you are a big boy. you are likely to bottom out the shock. check out the Kona Kula. i think it sounds perfect for you. Hit up this link http://www.konaworld.com/08_kula_w.htm

I have to agree with this. I am 6'2" and my weight is 270 right now. I tried a full suspension and it was not for me, so I went with a hardtail. I am not hitting the mountains yet, just some road and trail right now until I lose some weight.
Did you get a bike yet?

for as long as you know how to ride one and take good care of it, you wouldn't mess it up.... relax, don't worry
