My husband loves to do the really technical form of riding - navigating over rocks, logs, sheer drops, etc. - but he had to sell his bike a few years ago. I was looking on eBay to see if I could find a replacement as a Christmas present but realized I don't have a clue what he needs. I know he's not looking for something to go fast; rather he wants something that can handle the rigors of slowly hopping over large obstacles. If memory serves, he does not want something with a full suspension because it doesn't have the rigidity he needs for this form of riding but I can't be sure and I don't want to come right out and ask because he'll know what I'm up to! Can someone please offer me some guidance? Thanks!

How sweet of you to buy your husband a new bike.

It’s tricky though, because the frame may not be right for your husband, saddle may not be compatible, etc. Why don’t you try fishing about the bike he sold, be subtle with asking questions. Or why not ask a friend, a biking buddy perhaps, about your husband’s old bike?
Hope I am helpful

another idea on how you could get more information from your husband without really asking.
why not ask him to teach you how to ride. rent bikes and then ask him about his old bike. that way he wouldn't be too suspicious

afterglow's right, you should fish for information in a subtle way so that your husband wouldn't be suspicious. when you're going to buy a bike you should also ask around so that you'd get a good deal.
