Cape Espichel – the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape is formed by the Church (built in the late 17th century) and the buildings that were used as shelter for the pilgrims. The Memory Chapel is dated from the 15th or 16th century and it has 18th century glazed tiles.
It is connected to the legend of the Lady of the Cape: a couple of elderly people would have seen the image of the Lady climbing the cliffs mounted on a she-mule.
The legend adds that the footprints that can be seen on the rocks would be the footprints of the she-mule. In fact, recent investigations proved that these were dinosaurs’ footprints (Iguanon).
130 million years ago this place was protected by coral reefs and in the swampy beaches dinosaurs gracefully strolled leaving their marks on the ground! In the course of millions of years the mud was transformed into rock and the footprints were fossilised.
Cape Espichel is included in Natural Park of Arrabida Hills.
