Our Tour begins in Ericeira. Ericeira is a land of fishermen and farmers. It is a very old small town, probably passing and settlement place of the Phoenicians. In the 19th century, its golden age, Ericeira had a huge development, since it was the most crowded port in Estremadura, with Customhouse, where the supply of almost all the Province was made. The old commercial importance corresponds nowadays to the notable tourist movement, resulting from its favoured location and climate. The beaches and the fishing place, as well as the monumental and gastronomic heritage, based on a variety of fishes and sea-food, are its most notable attractions.
Azenhas do Mar – This is a small village built on a cliff more than 20m above the sea. The name of the village comes from some water-mills (water-mill means azenha) that existed near the sea (sea means mar), although the water-mills were moved by the water of a rivulet that flowed there. It is a bunch of whitewashed small houses, but here and there we can see some examples of some mansions, built by rich people usually from Lisbon who used to spend the summer here (some still do it today).
– In the southernmost point of Praia Grande there is a flight of stairs carved in the stone connecting the sandy strand to the top of the cliff. This exists for several decades and it is astonishing that only in 1981 did someone discover the remains of eleven trails of dinosaur footprints. These footprints were made in the mud of a swamp that existed here 90 million years ago. Later, several layers of sediments were deposited upon these. In the course of time their weight transformed mud into rock preserving the footprints. Thirty million years afterwards, the powerful geological forces that raised Sintra Hills made these rocks change their position getting to their present vertical position.
Cape Roca – This is the westernmost point in Continental Europe (Lat: 38º47' N - Long: 9º30' W - Alt: 140m) “Where the Land ends and the Sea begins”, where there still reigns the spirit of Faith and Adventure which took the Portuguese caravels in search of new worlds for the World. This is an inhospitable place, where Sintra Hills face the sea in a relentless fight and the cliffs go down perpendicularly into the turbulent waters in a 150m leap.
