The
story of Descente began in 1935 when Takeo Ishimoto opened his first retail
shop in Osaka, Japan. By 1955 he was specializing in athletic apparel
and stretch-style ski pants. Descente incorporated in 1958 and in 1964
began designing and marketing golf apparel.
Descente launched into the North American market by establishing its first
U.S. sales and distribution center in New York in 1979 and in 1984 began
distribution in Canada. In 1989, due to favorable regional economic factors
in the Rocky Mountain region, Descente moved its New York offices to Englewood,
Colorado. In October 1996, the Canadian and U.S. Descente operations merged
into one company to form Descente North America, Inc.
The name Descente is French for “downhill” and the company’s
logo symbolizes the three basic techniques of skiing: straight running,
side slipping and traversing. It also represents Descente’s ceaseless
pursuit of nurturing and promoting athleticism by offering high-performance
apparel that enhances the pure enjoyment of sport.
Descente works with many world-class athletes and organizations throughout
the world. Descente has produced team apparel for skiing, cycling, volleyball,
swimming, and speed skating and has clothed many gold medal winning Olympic
athletes (Eric Heiden won 5 gold medals at Lake Placid in a distinctive
Descente speed-skating suit.)
By providing sponsorship and support to a variety of athletes and events
across the globe, Descente is granted an opportunity to act as an ambassador
in the world of sports. Helping to increase society’s awareness
of the healthy benefits of a lively pursuit of sports by offering apparel
that responds to the true needs of athletes will enable Descente to command
respect well into the new millennium.
